Damien Hadfield

 

Major Damien Hadfield was commissioned into the Australian Regular Army as a Psychology Officer on 11 March 1996. Postings since that time have included:

 

·                Project Officer, 1 Psych Research Unit (Canberra, 1996-1997);

·                Psychology Officer, 13 Psych Unit (Melbourne, 1998);

·                Detachment Commander, Det 13 Psych Unit (1998-2000);

·                Student Counsellor, ADFA (Canberra, 2000-2002);

·                SO2, Directorate of Psychology (Canberra, 2003-2004);

·                2IC/OPSO, 1 Psych Unit (Sydney, 2005-2006);

·                Long Term Schooling (Brisbane, 2007).

 

Major Hadfield is currently posted as Officer Commanding, Psychology Support Section – South Queensland (PSS-SQ: Brisbane, 2008-2009).

 

Career highlights include deployments on Op Catalyst/Slipper, Op Sumatra Assist, Op Anode and Op Ramp to provide psych support to ADF personnel and Australian nationals. Major Hadfield has also been detached twice to Casey Station to support Australian Antarctic Division expeditions. Major Hadfield has been awarded AASM (with clasps IRAQ 2003 and ICAT), Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal (with clasp Indian Ocean), Iraq Service Medal and the Australian Defence Medal.

 

In his life before Army Major Hadfield has served as a counsellor, co-ordinator, and trainer with Victoria’s Gay and Lesbian Swithboard; a member of the Victorian Aids Council’s Youth Projects Team, and  Joint-Convenor of Melbourne University Gay Society.

 

Major Hadfield is currently completing the final year of a Masters of Organisational Psychology at University of Queensland. His thesis topic is a review of organisational and personal factors associated with completed suicides in the ADF. It is hoped this research will assist in understanding and preventing suicides in the ADF.

 

Major Hadfield and his partner Dan have been together for 7 years.
