Lieutenant Commander Andy Maskell enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in April 1995, joining as a Writer.  Throughout his career he has served at sea within HMA Ships Arunta, Ballarat, Stuart, Sydney, Manoora, and Choules.  He has served ashore within HMA Ships Cerberus, Harman, Kuttabul (Fleet Headquarters), and Stirling. His key appointments have included Chief Clerk Headquarters 633 in Baghdad, Iraq, Commanding Officer’s Secretary HMA Ships Stuart, Manoora and Choules, Assistant to the Warrant Officer of the Navy, Senior Writers Instructor, the inaugural Chief Petty Officer Maritime Logistics-Personnel Operations incumbent within the Fleet Logistics Division, and Fleet Warrant Officer ML-P.  

Lieutenant Commander Maskell was awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal on 26 January 2012 ‘for meritorious devotion to duty as the Personnel Officer aboard Manoora and for services to the wider naval community’. He was appointed as a Commissioned Officer in December 2017 and currently serves as the Project Officer in Navy People Branch working on the professionalisation of Navy’s Human Resource Management.

Andy became open about his sexuality in 1998 whilst posted to warship HMAS Sydney.  Over the years he has become more comfortable with himself and his sexuality. He was appointed an inaugural member of the Navy’s Defence Reference Group-Diverse Sexuality and Gender in 2017.

Andy has been an active member of DEFGLIS since 2010 and was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2019. Andy was appointed National Events Director in 2019.
