Defence personnel have only days to ensure they are correctly enrolled to participate in the Australian marriage law survey recently announced by government.

Australians have until 24 August 2017 to register or update their details with the Australian Electoral Commission to participate in the survey, which has been colloquially referred to as a postal plebiscite.

2017 08 13 SocialMedia

What you can or can’t post on social media as a Defence member is often not well understood.

Bottom Line Up Front: You can participate in the Australian marriage law debate and debate on other public issues, but: be respectful, keep your uniforms out of it, don't harass others, stick to discussing the issues, and avoid discussing political parties.

We’ll try to break down what policy means, but you need to make up your own mind about what is suitable to post on social media. If you write it, you own it, and must live with the consequences from the words that you write.

Across Defence, the importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages are the focus of national celebrations in 2017.

The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent at first (significant) European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds.
